Happy Green Bee, a new North Carolina based clothing distributor started by Burt's Bee's founder Roxanne Quimby, will launch it's new line of organic cotton baby clothes at NC's Earth Fare next week.
Local retailers are beginning to see a ground swell in requests for organic clothing and big player such as Patagonia and Nike now offer an organic label. To date however the organic fiber industry does not have a certification process.
In 2005 organic fiber sales grew to $160 million and accounted for almost a quarter of non-food organic sales. According to Wendy Priesnitz, editor of Natural Life magazine. "There is definitely a growing need out there," Priesnitz said. "We get so many e-mails from consumers looking for a source of organic clothing that we can't keep up with them."
